چکیده

The timing of infant weaning in the past is important for its implications birth-spacing and survival, hence population maintenance or growth under different socio-economic regimes. Prior to adoption agriculture, breastfeeding believed have been more prolonged amongst hunter-gatherers due, at least partly, lack suitable foods that are available agriculturalists. introduction pottery possibly also changed patterns due shifts food preparation even prior domesticated foods. Here we apply stable carbon nitrogen isotope sequential samples on dentine explore differences diet relating age, social roles sharing between children adults a well-preserved Mesolithic/Neolithic from cemetery Zvejnieki, Latvia. We address whether there Mesolithic Neolithic periods, defined here by appearance rather than agriculture. Considerable variability was observed, but general individuals tended be breastfed birth, with contribution breast milk declining after age 6–12 months, completely withdrawn 3 years. note difference δ15N profiles Neolithic, which may linked pottery. assess diets relation identities marked death, specifically presence absence animal tooth pendants. sequentially sampled first molars show who were buried without pendants as grave goods consumed freshwater resources during their childhoods those conclude childhood reflected societal within continued into adulthood.

Stable isotope paleoecology of Late Pleistocene Middle Stone Age humans from the Lake Victoria basin, Kenya.

Paleoanthropologists have long argued that environmental pressures played a key role in human evolution. However, our understanding of how these pressures mediated the behavioral and biological diversity of early modern humans and their migration patterns within and out of Africa is limited by a lack of archaeological evidence associated with detailed paleoenvironmental data. Here, we present t...

Stable Isotope-Based Paleoaltimetry

The quantitative estimation of paleoaltitude has become an increasing focus of Earth scientists because surface elevation provides constraints on the geodynamic mechanisms operating in mountain belts, as well as the influence of mountain belt growth on regional and global climate. The general observation of decreasing δ18O and δ2H values in rainfall as elevation increases has been used in both ...

Stable isotope profiles from subtropical marine gastropods of the family Fasciolariidae: growth histories and relationships to local environmental conditions

a measured MarT of 9.4 °C. Carbon isotopes of T. giganteus were ambiguous and reveal no significant relationships with trends in nutrient concentrations (n and P), dissolved oxygen, and dissolved organic carbon, although they did exhibit more negative values concomitant with landfall of Hurricane Irene and trended to increasing values with ontogeny that could reflect migration. Carbon isotopes ...

Stable Isotope Application in Animal Nutrition Science

The application of stable isotope analysis (SIA) has become a standard scientific approach in Agricultural and Ecological researches and, more in general, in several disciplines such as biology, botany, zoology, organic chemistry, climatology, and nutrition. The main objectives of this paper are (1) to provide a simple definition of stable isotopes and (2) to illustrate analytical measurement m...
